What is Pok Deng?

Pok Deng is a gambling card game casino originating from Thailand. In it, players try to get a hand with a higher unit digit than the dealer, taking into account pairs, threes, and straights. Pok Deng is also known as Pok Kao or Pok Paet Pok Kao. Pok is a two-card hand with a team of eight or nine, the strongest hand wins. If a player has poker, they must immediately turn their hand face down and cannot draw any more cards. If the dealer has pok, they must also turn their hand face down and compare it with all other players. If both the dealer and the player have pok, they are tied. If only one player has pok, they win against the dealer.

How does Pok Deng play each game?

This card game can be played by two to seventeen players, including the dealer, but is recommended for three to nine. To begin, players designate a dealer who will control the entire game. One person can remain the dealer for multiple rounds, or players can agree to alternate being the dealer.

Each round is fairly short, lasting anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes. Each player, except the dealer, places a bet in cash, chips, or small items such as wrapped candy and places it on the table in front of them. Each player plays against the dealer without competing with the other players.

The dealer shuffles a standard 52-card deck; decides to go clockwise or counterclockwise; and deals two cards face down, one at a time, to each player, ending with himself. The remaining cards become the draw pile for players to draw from when it is their turn.

Play proceeds in the order in which the cards are dealt. During their turn, players have the option of drawing a card (calling) or not (standing). A player can only draw one card from the top of the draw deck, meaning that each player has only two or three cards in each hand. (Since each player can have a maximum of three cards, seventeen is the maximum number of players before running out of cards.)

• If a player’s initial two-card hand has a team (described below) of eight or nine, he or she has pok (Thai: ป๊อก) to announce it and immediately show those cards face down. This is a good hand, and the player cannot draw any more cards.
• The dealer takes the last turn when drawing cards to score:
• If the dealer has pok, those cards are turned face down and all of the player’s hands are compared to the dealer’s. If the dealer does not have a poker, before deciding to draw a card, the dealer may reveal the decks of several players and compare them with his deck.

How to score and arrange cards in Pok Deng

Players will win or lose, depending on the contents of their hand. Just like in Poker, there are card arrangements that can increase the value of a hand beyond the parts. The scores of these handsets are called the deck stamps. These card arrangements will be explained below in the “Scoring” section. The team is the total value of the cards in a hand, taken from the unit digit. Cards two through nine are worth the number printed on them. Tens, Js, Qs, and Ks are worth zero. Deng is a multiplier applied to a player’s bet, depending on their hand arrangement:

• Regular Deng: a hand with no special arrangement of cards that has a deng of 1.
• Straight Deng: a three-card hand with three cards of the same suit (diamonds, hearts, clubs, or spades) that has a deng of 2.
• Pair Deng: a three-card hand with two cards of the same suit (e.g. 5-5-9) that has a deng of 3.
• Triple Deng: a three-card hand with three cards of the same suit (e.g. 4-4-4) that has a deng of 5.
